What is it exactly?
Between each vertebra, there is an intervertebral disc that acts as a cushion.
A disc herniation occurs when the nucleus of the disc protrudes and can compress a nerve root.
Symptoms
Lower back or neck pain
Pain radiating to leg or arm
Tingling
Muscle weakness
But be aware: many people have hernias on imaging and do not have pain.
The image does not always explain the symptom.
Rest or movement?
Prolonged absolute rest: bad idea.
Current evidence recommends:
Progressive movement
Therapeutic exercise
Load control
Specific strength work
Fear of movement often chronicises pain.
A hernia does not mean your back is 'broken'. It means it needs an appropriate strategy.
